Growth is an inevitable part of life, but it’s not always easy. It’s messy, uncertain, and often requires us to make choices that stretch us beyond our comfort zones. For those of us walking with God, growth involves something even deeper—learning to follow His lead.
For years, I struggled in this area. For over 25 years, I wrestled with making understanding God’s Word and being consistent in it a top priority. I would open the Bible, not to allow the Word to take root in me, but to gather enough knowledge to give out to others. My focus was outward, but my foundation was shallow.
When life’s storms came and I needed to stand firmly on the Word of God to make sound decisions, I realized how unsteady my footing was. Without a solid understanding of Scripture, I found it challenging to discern God’s voice and direction in pivotal moments.
I’ve learned that committing to God’s Word is the key. It’s not just about reading—it’s about letting the Word transform us, guide us, and become the foundation upon which we build our lives. The Role of the Holy Spirit: Learning to follow the Holy Spirit’s guidance is key, but it becomes easier as we deepen our relationship with God and understand His Word. The Holy Spirit acts as our counselor and helper, illuminating our minds to the truths found in scripture and guiding us in our daily lives. By cultivating a prayerful life and being open to the Spirit’s nudges, we can discern His voice amidst the noise of the world. As we embrace this relationship, we gain peace and clarity in decision-making. As it is written in John 14:26 (NIV): “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
God’s Ways Are in His Word: Scripture is the foundation of God’s ways. When we’re unfamiliar with His Word, recognizing His voice becomes a challenge. Just as Jesus stated, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27). This verse reminds us that through the study and meditation of Scripture, we learn to discern His voice amidst the noise of the world. By grounding ourselves in His Word, we become like sheep who can readily recognize our Shepherd, enabling us to follow His guidance with confidence and clarity.
Commitment to Scripture: Committing to learning and meditating on God’s Word enables us to discern His leading with clarity and confidence. As Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path,” underscoring the importance of Scripture in guiding our decisions and illuminating our journey through life.
Building Familiarity with God’s Voice: Just as we recognize a close friend’s voice without seeing them, familiarity with God’s voice comes from spending time with His Word. This journey of knowing Him deeper requires more than occasional reading; it involves immersing ourselves in scripture daily, allowing His teachings to shape our thoughts and actions. As we meditate on verses like John 10:27, where Jesus states, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me,” we begin to attune our hearts to His guidance.
