There are seasons when life feels like a wilderness experience—unfamiliar, overwhelming, and silent. In those times, writing becomes more than an outlet; it becomes a map. A map that you can write out detail upon detail. As you write, you release all the intricacies of what you may have been thinking. The tangled thoughts begin to find order, and the silence begins to speak.
More Than Journaling
Some think of this process as journaling.
For me, I can get lost with a pen and a blank sheet of paper. It’s a canvas where unlimited possibilities are possible. It can also be therapeutic in that it allows you to express what may be troubling you without judgment. There’s freedom in the flow—freedom to be raw, to be real, and to be honest with what’s going on inside.
Each word laid down is a step forward, a powerful prayer in ink.
Honesty in the Unknown
Writing your way through the wilderness is about being honest in the unknown and finding light as you go. Sometimes, you don’t even know what you feel until you begin to write. And in those moments of honesty, God meets you. Even when the wilderness feels dry and desolate, God’s presence is not absent.
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”
— Psalm 34:18 (ESV)
God Meets Us on the Page
Even in the wilderness, God is near. Writing is one way He meets us there. You can even incorporate God’s truth into your writing as you remember what He said and make it personal—relating it to your specific situation. For every situation in our life, there is a word from God that applies.
When you begin to write and invite His Word into the process, the wilderness begins to shift. It may not change overnight, but suddenly you’re no longer wandering—you’re walking with purpose, step by step, page by page.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
— Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Never Alone
With every journal entry or whispered thought on the page, He reveals that even when we feel lost, we are never alone.
“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
— Hebrews 13:5 (NIV)
So write. Write your way through. Let it be messy. Let it be honest. Let it be a therapy session for you. Because even in the wilderness, there’s a way—and God is walking it with you.
